Lola's First Week

We have spent the first week of Lola's little life in a hotel room in Grand Junction, Colorado. It has been a wonderful time to bond with her and get to know her, but we are anxious to get home!

We had our first pediatrician visit on Tuesday after she was born and found out that she is still progressing nicely! (I also made the pediatrician look at Rodney's incision site to be sure it looked ok! It did!) She had gained an ounce and a half back from when we left the hospital the morning before. A nurse from the hospital also visited us on Wednesday to check in and make sure she was ok...still good, still a little jaundiced, but the nurse told us to let her sit in a sunny window for a bit each day and that would help.

Later that morning, we did spend some time sunbathing and also did Lola's nails. I had NO idea that baby's nails grow so fast! She loves being in the sunny window.

Going a little stir crazy, we asked the nurse if it would be ok to take her out. I tried to look that up online, but like everything else, there were just too many opinions to make an informed decision. The nurse gave us the go-ahead--just don't let people touch her, and we were off!

Lola had her first shopping trip! Like any good shopper, she learned to "walk the Target"--which is always relaxing, and she also made a trip to the shoe store and Kohls. And of course, what shopping would be complete without a trip to Sonic? Thank goodness this town has a Sonic!

On Friday, we went to dinner with our friend Tom. It's been so fun to see how excited people get over a new baby! Tom had told me of a friend of his (who we've never met) who was very excited about our story. She told Tom that if we head his way, she just had to hold the baby. Well, we aren't heading Tom's way, so she sent us a gift. A total stranger sent our little Lola a gift! I was so touched! We have really enjoyed the book she gave us, Dr. Seuss's ABC book. It's fun to change the names around too, and Lola seems to like it!

I posted the one week picture yesterday, I've decided that I want to take a picture daily so that we can see her grow and change. I know it's going to happen so fast I won't even see it!

Backtracking...How our adventure started

OK, so many people don't know our story, or when it began; but we made the decision to adopt over Memorial Day weekend in 2008. Though we had talked about it as an option, we hadn't decided until that weekend. We were in Ruidoso with our family and were hanging out with our niece and nephew, Hannah and Jake and Jake, very innocently asked us, "When are you guys going to have a baby?" I thought that was cute,
I asked him if he was tired of being the youngest, and he said, "No, I'm tired of being the slowest."
We had a good laugh about that and told our sister-in-law, who apologized for that. We had struggled with infertility for years, but this was not an emotional trigger for me. But Kristi (sister-in-law) told me that Hannah prayed every night for us to have a baby. That WAS an emotional trigger for me!

So, I was telling Rodney about this conversation, and he said, "Well, aren't you ready to adopt yet?" To this day, I don't know if he was kidding or if he really thought I was the one holding up the beginning to this process, but I immediately went home and started the research.
THAT was overwhelming!

I called my friend, Rebecca, who is VERY good with the research and organization and found out they were using an agency in Colorado called Hope's Promise. It's a Christian agency with a low rate of birth mothers changing their minds and does a great job of counseling them through the process. AND, their fee structure was pretty clear, as opposed to other agencies I was looking at.
So, we put in the preliminary paperwork in July of 2008 and got approved to BEGIN the process.
That was approved, but we didn't really do anything until we received notice that we had to attend a 16 hour parenting training in Colorado. That was October. We attended with our friends Russ and Rebecca, and that's when it started to seem real.

When we got home, we had the packet of paperwork waiting for us...all the criminal checks, FBI clearance, fingerprinting, autobiographies, home studies and medical histories that had to be filled out before we would be considered.

At our first home study, we found out we needed fire extinguishers (always a good idea) and a fence around our pool. That was November, right before Thanksgiving. After those things were done, then we had a second visit in January, after which all the paperwork was sent to the juvenile courts to give us the A-OK that we are fit parents.

Then we waited.

It wasn't until a conversation with my receptionist--who was 5 months pregnant and talking about "expecting" and registering for all her baby stuff, that I realized that we, too, were "expecting" and I verbalized as much to her--and freaked OUT!

That was June 4.

I told Rodney on June 7 about my little "freak out" and he asked if we should start getting a nursery together, I promptly answered, "NO" as I had no intentions of looking at an empty nursery for who knows how long. One difference in "expecting" when you are pregnant and when you are adopting, is when you are pregnant you KNOW you have 9 months. When you are adopting, you have no idea how long you are "expecting."

On June 11, we came home to a voice mail from Sarah at Hope's Promise letting us know she would be showing profile books to a birth mom and wanted our permission to show ours. I called her the next day and she told us about the birth mom (April) and that she would be meeting with her on the upcoming Tuesday (June 16) and that April had indicated she would want to meet the people she selected, BEFORE making her final decision.

Let me tell you...those 4 days were the longest 4 days I think I've every had to wait! I felt like a child waiting before Christmas!

I was at work on the 16th when I got the call from Sarah telling us that April wanted to meet us.
We made arrangements to meet her the following Monday in Grand Junction Colorado. We had a lovely dinner with April and Sarah, and felt like we were on a blind date! We found out that April is musical and the birth father is artistic.

We still didn't know if she had picked us, but I was able to feel her pregnant tummy one time before we left. I can still feel that little bump under my hand and hope I never forget it!
When my phone rang the next morning, we were still in bed. Rodney said he has never seen me move so fast in his life...

I said, "You've never seen me move that fast in the morning?"

He said, "No. I've never seen you move that fast EVER."

I'm pretty sure I cried. I KNOW my mom cried when we told her. And the phone calls and e-mails began. The news spread.

We thought we had until the 27th of July...

Lola's Birthday

On July 3, we had a call from the social worker, Sarah, who was out of town for the holiday weekend letting us know that April had been to the hospital because of labor pains, and indicated that the baby (at the time, we didn't know boy or girl) would most likely be born in the next few days. We were on the way to take my father-in-law to the airport as he was in town for Rodney's back surgery.
We got Jay dropped off for his flight and headed straight for Babies R Us for a car seat. We knew nothing else about babies, but we DID know you have to have a car seat!
After Babies R Us, April called us and releived our anxiety a bit as she said she was going to work on the 4th and had plans to watch the fire works...HA! Here's the post from the day she was born:
Baby Lola Raye Sherrard came a bit early and a bit unexpected! We got a call about 4:45 from April, letting us know that her water broke in the wee hours of the morning and she was at the hospital and they were going to induce.
We, of course, sprinted out of bed and started making arrangements for me to get to Grand Junction--Rodney, having just had surgery, has not seen his doc since and we were also just not ready for both of us to be gone from home just yet. So I hopped on a plane this morning at 7:15 to hopefully get here in time to cut the cord...literally! Unfortunately, little Lola was quite anxious to greet the world and arrived at 12:11 p.m. via c-section. My flight got in at 12:09! Our wonderful friend Tom met me at the airport and got me here in time to be there for Lola's first bath, her first diaper (all the lovely tests) and I was the one who got to feed her for the first time. Still waiting on the tarry diaper to appear! I'm getting the hang of the swaddle and am pondering the fact that little Lola has a better hospital gown than Rodney did on Tuesday when he was at the hospital.
Uncle Tom will be back in a few...since it's just me right now, I'm anchored to the room until Rodney gets here(which is fine by me) I needed me some Sonic, so Uncle Tom will be back with dinner, a lime Diet Coke, his camera, and a CELL PHONE CHARGER because, in my haste, I left home with a dead phone and only my car charger. More photos to come...she is healty, beautiful, 10 fingers and 10 toes, and for those of you interested, came in weighing 6 lbs. and was 18 inches long.
After getting settled at the hospital, I realized that I had only packed 3 pair of pants and one shirt. Totally forgot my tooth brush and toothpaste. Brought one pair of shoes. I was a little out of sorts that morning!

Thank goodness for Tom, he set us up nicely and knew exactly what we would need when leaving the hospital! We have used every bit!
